The Limousin, like many French regions, has plenty of Gîtes to offer. These can range form small converted stone built barns to large Chateaux. One thing that you can be assured of, is that they all boast their own unique character. The Gîtes idea was first set up by Government as a way of helping rural farmers to boost their income. The relaxed tax regime meant that they could profit from renting out their properties to holiday makers. Initially the scheme appealed to French town and city dwellers, looking to escape to the country. They would find "tranquility" staying in rustic, rural properties. These days, however, expectations have increased. Gîtes are a far cry form their humble beginnings and many are described as "luxury". With a vast array to chose from holiday makers are spoilt for choice and now expect the same level of comfort that they are used to at home. Dishwashers, microwaves and of course a swimming pool, are all high on the list of criteria.

This increase in the number of Gîtes available has made the market more competitive, and this, coupled with cheaper ferry crossings and flights, has considerably lowered the cost of a Gîte holiday in France. The Limousin, with its' central location, is easy to reach and an ideal base for exploring. The resort lakes of Vassiviere and St Pardoux and the Perigord/Limousin national park offer something for everyone. If you are looking for a Gîte have a look at the selection below....

Traditionally as a guest at a chambre d'hôte you were a guest of the family and would dine with them t breakfast or in the evening. These days, however, many tend to be a bit more formal with en suite rooms and separate dinning facilities. There is even a grading scheme run by Gites de france who award "Epis" (equivalent to a star rating) to individual properties.
